Unidentified Pink Sludge on Remote Tasmanian Shoreline Raises Concerns of Possible Algae Outbreak
Agencies in the island state are working to identify a magenta ooze that has appeared on a secluded beach, with some scientists worried it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
Broad Appearance Across Shore
The pink-tinged sludge materialized across a stretch of a coastal area about 37 miles south of Hobart. A similar sludge has also been recorded on parts of Little Roaring Beach and Little Taylors Bay.
Specimens Gathered for Analysis
Samples have been gathered and provided to the environmental agency for testing. A official stated that "algae outbreaks are a normal phenomenon in reaction to changes in minerals, heat, rain or illumination".
"These blooms are sometimes called reddish tides because the outbreaks can color the water crimson," the official added. "Not all phytoplankton events are harmful, with several kinds serving as a major source of food for marine life in the aquatic ecosystem."
"The usual source of red tides in Tasmanian waters is the marine phytoplankton Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce glowing light shows at night."

"There have been lots of these events around the island of late," she added.
The scientist explained sea sparkle did not generate poisons like the species involved in South Australia's severe outbreak, but it does eat tiny creatures and "many fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were most at risk.
"You usually see a bloom of the organism after a proliferation of something else, or for example a fish reproduction," she said.
Calls for Action and Community Health
Lilly Henley, who gathered specimens of the pink sludge in Tasmania, said it looked like the suspected bloom had "grown significantly" and proposed the fish farming business was the most likely culprit, citing comparable events elsewhere.
"Therefore the state needs to issue a strong warning here, the government and the EPA need to react to this. We need to study the examples we've taken and we need to inform the community here," she emphasized.
The scientist expressed she had worries for public safety after experiencing a tingling sensation along her body while being sprayed with contaminated seawater.
Claims of Deceased Sea Creatures and Calls for Government Action
An conservation group has documented dead octopus and dead sea cucumbers being found on the beach, with a longtime environmental campaigner calling the event as an "natural disaster" and calling on the government head to inspect and "assume command the response that government must be making".
"The leader needs to understand this is a crisis in the unfolding, commercially as well as environmentally."

Addressing reporters, the official stated he was did not know of any links between the algae outbreak and the aquaculture sector, saying scientific testing was needed before judgments could be reached.
