Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such treatments must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs report a intense return of appetite.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
