India's capital Wakes Up to Toxic Smog Following Diwali

Tuesday brought inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered breathing severely hazardous air that registered in the "severe" level.

Alarming Air Quality Measurements

Various sections of the city showed an AQI above 500, which represents ten times the recommended threshold established by the World Health Organization.

Particular areas, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1,800, equating to 15-20x exceeding safe limits.

Pyrotechnics Ban and Recent Developments

Beginning in 2020, officials had enforced a total prohibition on the sale and use of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that engulfs the metropolis as the cold season sets in.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the recently formed local leadership petitioned the supreme court to propose a relaxation of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously criticized by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a middle ground between "heritage and public health".

Court Verdict and Implementation

Much to the frustration of environmental and health campaigners, judicial authorities complied with the appeal, mandating that green firecrackers could be set off during specific time windows throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was extensive flouting of the designated hours across the metropolis, with little monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout the capital recorded pollution reaching highest levels around midnight to some of the worst readings seen during Diwali in at least the past three years.

Regional Effects

The widespread use of firecrackers during Diwali also triggered a dispute with bordering Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's the Punjab region partially attributing worsening air quality in Lahore on pollutants coming from neighboring India following the events.

Long-Standing Environmental Crisis

Extremely elevated readings of air contamination in the city have continued as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the condition continuing to worsen.

Around Diwali, the amount of dangerous airborne contaminants in the air has been documented to spike to significantly exceeding the most severe levels ever measured in Beijing, which was once regarded as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.

Diverse Contamination Factors

This crisis in the capital is resulting from a mix of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in nearby areas of farming communities.

Within these states, farmers routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, generating dangerous smog that remains stagnant over the city as winter air descends.

Public Health and Financial Consequences

The economic and health impact on the roughly thirty-three million residents residing in the Delhi area is significant, according to various research.

These hazardous conditions leads to elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and lung conditions, and can result in cancer.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be causing ten thousand early deaths annually in Delhi.
