"Any idea when you're speaking to the Haim sisters?" a message pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There is only one problem: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're not alone. A host of celebrated fans have publicly petitioned for the position.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest bands, they're a inseparable trio. Their videos often feature them marching in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such pure joy you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the biggest honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage young girls to make music."

"And thus everyone is invited to be the honorary member of Haim."

Award Recognition

The group are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the accolade is deeply felt by the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the pioneers that came before us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record came out of a time of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that unique transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes detail breakups and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in real time who they aspire to be.

"I love description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed resilience required a fresh approach – more unpolished and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The band's openness fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating tales.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Path

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an international audience.

Yet Haim will always be their primary commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still going strong."
